Position Scope

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, monitors, samples, inspects and ensures the City's water and wastewater systems remain compliant with federal, state, and local regulations in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Performs various technical duties including investigating wastewater and drinking water complaints and recommends action.
- Inspects pretreatment and waste control devices/processes.
- Collects samples and conducts inspections of commercial establishments, inspecting pretreatment and waste control devices/processes for compliance with standards and regulations governing grease traps and oil separation related to the Fats, Oils, and Grease Program (FOG).
- Conducts field inspections to verify backflow function, information, location, and business names. Investigates wastewater/water quality complaints.
- Performs administrative duties as assigned.
- Maintains a database of records of testing (SAMS) (LINKO).
- Assists in conducting flow studies of city sewer mains and water systems.
- Prepares reports and attends meetings.
- May provide operational and technical support to the water and wastewater operations group.
- Responds to internal and external inquiries; works to resolve in collaboration with the water resources team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma, GED or equivalent and one year experience in data/sample collation, inspections, customer service, or related fields; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred: Post-secondary course work in biology, chemistry, math or related.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Related techniques, methods, practices, and procedures.
- Customer service principles.
- Testing procedures.
- Standard office equipment, and Microsoft Office programs.
Skill in & Ability to:
- Provide customer service.
- Prepare technical reports.
- Perform environmental testing.
- Communicate and have interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
- Interpret, understand, and apply water and wastewater standards and procedures, applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations, and City policies.
- Perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, formulas, factors, and decimals.
- Perform work of a moderately complex nature.
- Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of work assigned.
Additional Information
Special Requirements: Possession of a valid Arizona Drivers' License; obtain an ADEQ Grade I license in Wastewater Collection from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within one (1) year of hire.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work is performed indoors and outdoors; ability to lift 50 lbs.
